Some of the greatest composers of symphonies and concertos were deemed masters because of their devotion to their own personal artistic vision. All the greatest romantics, including Brahms, Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Barber, never imitated others or adapted their style to fit fleeting musical trends. As a result, they were able to create landmark compositions that have stood the test of time as true artistic masterpieces. In the same way, 20th-century composer Nicholas Maw has become a standout among his colleagues because of his integrity.
This album, which features romantic violinist Joshua Bell, is a recording of the Violin Concerto Maw wrote specifically for Bell. Throughout all four movements, Bell flaunts Maw's exceptional writing techniques, extracting mysterious space-like effects and otherworldly rhythms that can only be played by someone with a true handle on contemporary music. The piece, which is saturated with shimmering tremolos, jaw dropping double-stops and maddening shifts, gives listeners a feel for Maw's genuine creativity and a taste of the best the 20th century has to offer.
